Why We Do What We Do

While on a hunting trip in the Oklahoma panhandle I received a call that explains why we spend hours working on our breeding program. We don't spend the money to have eyes, elbows and hips certified for health. If we have a dog with bad hips or bite or demeanor we simply don't breed and have them altered. It's happened to us more than once to have a dog with a bad bite or bad hips. It has always came from an outside kennel that we were trying to out-cross with.

Back to the phone call, this client is from Tennessee I think, his dog Kacey Lynne is two years old. When his dog was a pup he gave me an alarming call about a noise sensitive pup, he described what happened and to my relief it had nothing to do with gunshots. The client had been cleaning his shotgun in his basement along with his dog Kasey. When he closed the chamber she flinched and he was instantly concerned. He gave me a call and I explained how I condition my pups to gun fire. It is all about setting the prey drive, in other words get your dog so excited about chasing birds nothing can break the excitement. Well he bought some pen raised quail and introduced his girl to quail scent. She absolutely loved the chase and he shot a blank 22 over her, which she ignored, and continued (as I suspected) the chase. He called to let me know all was well with her. He stopped by the kennel last year to tell me she did well, nothing spectacular but she was not a problem in the field.

Back to the phone call, he called after he was in Kansas a day or two to let me know Kacey was dong really well and that he was headed further west in Kansas to hunt pheasant with his grandson. Well, a couple of days went by and then .......... yes, you guessed it, the phone call. His grandson kept telling him they were making memories, then it happened ...a memory they both will never forget. Kasey, in the span of about 30 minutes had pointed 4 roosters and found every dead bird for them. My client has hunted a long time over many dogs, he has had (I may not have this right) 2 fantastic dogs and one that may have gotten to that level if not a tragic accident earlier this year. He told me Kasey was as good a dog as he has had for her age. she found the 4 roosters on her 2nd birthday. His words were "she is phenomenal and a testament to your breeding program".

J&S Kennels is all about getting people and their dogs out in the field. For my client to call and let me know how how happy he is with his dog is a great joy. At the time he called, my brother and I just finished a miserable day in the field hunting quail. After I had time to reflect on the call, it made me teary eyed that one of the pups I sold made a lasting memory for a man and his grandson. It also made me realize the miserable day in the field quail hunting with my brother, was a blessing from God as is each and every day we walk on earth spreading His word.

To wrap this up, we strive to put people in the field with dogs that will make memories for family and friends.

And remember 1 Cor. 10:31 .......... "what ever you do, do all for the Glory of God."
