The Command Lead
The "Command Lead" or "Wonder Lead" is a fascinating training tool. You don't need to say a word just slip the lead over their head and give tugs or "cues" on the lead. If the pup runs out ahead of you just turn 180 degrees and give them a tug, no need to jerk them hard just a firm tug, the learning process is all done on the release of the lead. Tugging or cueing gives pressure to the neck, compliance of the dog turns the pressure off. In the video I give a few hints of what to do such as turning into the dog if they are crowding you. It is a good idea to walk in figure eights to get the dog used to turning in both directions and to keep an eye on the handler. Also using it to train on agility obstacles is a must. The obstacles you use can be true agility items you purchase or build yourself or what I use is a couple of barrels and tubs that I use to make stair steps from, the other barrel I made a cradle for the barrel to lay horizontal. You don't need to say a word just continue to give a cue to the dog and he'll eventually comply to turn off the pressure. Then you can name the command if you choose.
During the making of the video you'll see Bo breaking and running to his safe place (his kennel), he did this due to feeling the training pressure, at the time I had released the lead and he was dragging it. I quickly got to the lead and corrected him and he finished the video as planned. That is a good example of what a dog will do when they see to much pressure and what the trainer needs to do to finish on a good note.
Again everything you do with the Command Lead is a point of contact to the neck and is eventually transferred to the eCollar. It will only take 10 to 15 minutes max to get the dog working with you providing you are using the lead properly. Don't think for a minute that this is just for pups, I have trained many adult dogs with the tool, you also need to use some common sense, an 8 week old pup doesn't need to be on a command lead but 4 month old pup might. It is a good feeling to be able to get your dogs to heel for their safety in certain situations, such as walking down roads.
